Top Things to Know Before Your Machu Picchu Adventure

Machu Picchu is one of the most visited destinations in the world. Machu Picchu is located in Cusco – Peru. At Terra Quechua Peru, we believe in intimate group experiences. We keep our group sizes small to ensure you receive personalized attention and make meaningful connections with your fellow travelers. Raquel and Edwin, your trip leaders, are passionate about sharing their knowledge of the region’s rich history and natural wonders.

Planning Before Your Machu Picchu Adventure Here are the top things to know:

Before You Go: Booking & Planning

  • Book in Advance: It's crucial to book your Machu Picchu entrance tickets and train tickets well in advance, especially if you plan to visit during the high season (June to August) or if you want to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, as permits are limited. Terra Quechua Peru, like other tour operators, can assist with these bookings.

  • Best Time to Visit: Machu Picchu Tour has a dry season (April to October) and a rainy season (November to March).

    • Dry Season: Offers sunny days and is ideal for hiking, but it's also the busiest.

    • Rainy Season: Has more chances of precipitation, but the landscapes are lush, and there are fewer crowds.

    • Shoulder Seasons: April/May and September/October often provide a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

  • Passport Validity: Your passport or identity document must be valid at the time of entry. You'll need it for identification and ticket confirmation.

Getting There: Transportation & Routes

  • Ways to Reach Machu Picchu:

    • Inca Trail: A challenging but rewarding multi-day hike (e.g., 4 days/3 nights or 5 days/4 nights offered by Terra Quechua Peru) that leads directly to Machu Picchu.

    • By Train: The fastest and safest option, with scenic routes. Most visitors prefer this.

    • Hidroeléctrica Route: An alternative route involving a bus and a walk.

  • From Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu Citadel:

    • Walking: A long, steep walk of approximately 9 kilometers (about 1.5 hours uphill).

    • By Bus: Buses depart from Aguas Calientes starting at 5:30 AM, with a journey of about 30 minutes.

Health & Safety

  • Altitude Sickness (Soroche): Machu Picchu is at 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level, and Cusco is even higher. It's common to experience altitude sickness.

    • Acclimatize: Spend a few days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley to acclimatize before heading to Machu Picchu.

    • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water.

    • Coca Leaves/Tea: Chewing coca leaves or drinking coca tea is a traditional remedy for altitude sickness.

    • Consult Doctor: If you have concerns, consult your doctor about preventative measures.

  • What to Bring:

    • Passport: Essential for entry.

    • Clothing: Layers are key due to fluctuating temperatures. Include waterproof clothing, a raincoat, a hat, and sunglasses.

    • Footwear: Comfortable hiking shoes are a must as there are many stairs and uneven paths.

    • Sun Protection: Sunscreen and sunglasses are highly recommended.

    • Insect Repellent: Machu Picchu is in a subtropical cloud forest, so insects like sandflies can be present.

    • Money: Carry some cash for small purchases, as not all vendors accept cards.

    • Reusable Water Bottle: Single-use plastic bottles are banned from Machu Picchu.

Your Experience at Machu Picchu Tour

  • Guided Tours: While you can visit without a guide, joining a tour is highly recommended for a richer understanding of the citadel's history and culture. Terra Quechua Peru offers expert local guides.

  • Circuits: Machu Picchu has specific circuits or routes you must follow. Understand which sites are included in your ticket.

  • Llamas and Alpacas: These animals roam freely around the citadel and are generally calm, but maintain respectful distance.

  • Respect Rules: Park rangers will enforce rules regarding behavior and movement through the site.

  • Photography: You can take photos, but be mindful of regulations and other visitors. Early morning visits often offer fewer crowds and better photo opportunities.
